Here’s the area we’re looking at. Lot’s of good habitat at moderate elevation with limited access. Basically lining a canoe.
It’s about 500-600 metres or so from the road to the river through forest and wetland. It’s a bit of slog and it is probably enough of barrier to most hunters. LOT’S of moose sign, but we didn’t see any moose that day. Just lot’s of fresh track and scat.
We walked up the river a bit to look at what we would have to deal with. The water level has dropped quite a bit in the last couple of weeks and it should stay about the same by the time we get out there. About waist deep in the deepest section, so it should be easy to line, but a bit trickier to paddle down on the way back depending on the logjams. We’ll likely have to line in sections on the way down too.
It’s open season next week, so it could be a bit busier on the road, but I imagine there will be few (if any) groups in the area we’re going. Even if we get skunked, it should be a nice trip.
Trip report when we return.
Takin it up a notch with the 3d google map!
ReplyDeleteGood luck - looks like a great area to hunt!
Fresh tracks are exciting - my (limited) experience with moose has been that they don't move cross-country very fast. I'm excited about this - I think getting back in there will get you into moose no one else is hunting.
ReplyDeleteI had to show off the mountains somehow. The far point is where we hope to camp, but it might be a long day lining up the river so we'll play it by ear. Also, Alana is sick, so it may be three of us with 2 canoes...
ReplyDeleteThere was a partially flagged trail to the river, but it looked old and I can't imagine there will be more than a couple of other groups up there.
Scott's been up there before and he didn't see anyone else. Although he didn't come back with a moose either...
It's a bit silly how often I've been checking this over the past few days.
ReplyDeleteSorry to leave you in suspense, I'll get a report up soon;)
